Start Of The ‘Holding Pattern’
Our plan of a quick dash round Alice Springs to refuel was stopped dead. We were now facing a significantly longer time back here. The breakdown trucked parked the van up at the back of the hotel we’d previously stayed at before taking Tinfish off to Toyota. Typically it was a Friday so nothing was going to happen to the car until Monday…..
History In The Making
Camp by the side of a pub with easy access to their swimming pool sounded like a mighty fine plan initially, that was until the outside music was still blaring past 9pm. Between the tunes bouncing into our van and the warm night air there was no hope of sleep in the kids. Alex had snuck off for a bit of ‘me’ time to watch the rugby…..
Bumbling To The Bungles
Having had such a fun time with the Perry’s on the first half of the Gibb, we managed to tee up another get-together as they were returning from the Bungle Bungles before heading further north to Darwin. Rendezvous point, Lake Argyle…
A Hiking Celebration
It was time to take the more rugged path as we turned the car left off the Gibb River Road and headed North up the Kalumburu Road. We made it to the first homestead at Drysdale as we’d read about their delicious burgers but alas, they were only served at lunch and we’d arrived for dinner!
Teaching New Friends The Art Of Slowing Down
Thankfully we didn’t have too far to go after the Broome restock, yet we still managed to arrive at camp at night (are you surprised?!). Before hitting the Gibb River Road, we made a detour left and headed for the mouth of the Fitzroy River. We’d read on Wiki there were great riverside camps, however not having daylight to suss out the area made it a little challenging to determine the lay of the land….
And Relax….
Ruggedly picturesque and sparsely populated, it’s been said it’s got it all; an area bigger than 75% of the world’s countries, cram-packed with pristine coastal beaches, steep-sided mountain ranges cut through with sandstone and limestone gorges and cave systems, waterfalls, ancient rock art, remote cattle stations, big rivers, big fish, and most important of all, even bigger adventure…..
Flying High
It was straight to the air-conditioned mall when we arrived in Karratha. The kids needed a few clothes as they’d grown out of many of theirs, or they were just falling apart but more importantly new boots were needed!
Puzzle time
Being skool hols, we knew it might be busy, but even though Dales camp was booked to the hilt, we were pleasantly surprised at how spacious it felt as it’s been well laid out so that you weren’t on top of one another. Up and breakfasted, the moment we’d been waiting for with an ounce of dread….
Smitten
Pupils dilated, erratic breathing and his heart beating as if a race had been won, it was love at first sight, Reo & the Ute had started a love affair. He was smitten! Attached to it like it was his prized pet, he spent breakfast, lunch and dinner with it, sitting on the back, relaxed and happy not giving a care in the world.
